Lady Hornets outpace Eagleville for road district win

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Eagleville Lady Eagles 56-44 on the road Friday for their 17th win of the season.

The Lady Hornets took the lead late in the opening period and held it for the rest of the game as they maintained their perfect record in district play to start the season.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early advantage behind a trio of 3-pointers in the opening minutes, but the Lady Hornets ended the first quarter on a 12-3 run to pull ahead.

Huntland led 16-12 after one quarter.

The Lady Hornets led by as many as eight points in the second quarter before the Lady Eagles chipped away at the deficit to make it a one-possession game. Yareli Avalos scored six of Huntland’s nine points in the second quarter.

Huntland led 25-22 at halftime.

The Lady Hornets started the third quarter with a 14-4 run to bring their lead up to double digits for the first time in the contest before the Lady Eagles once again made up some ground late in the period.

Huntland led 40-31 going into the final period.

The Lady Hornets maintained a steady lead the rest of the way as they were able to set the final margin of victory at 12 points.

Morgan Sanders led the Lady Hornets with 16 points for the game, followed by Logan McLennan and Avalos with 11 points each.

Kinsley Kilpatrick scored eight points, Jocy May scored seven and Aysia Williams scored three.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 17-8 on the season and 4-0 in district play.

They will next play Tuesday at Cornersville High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
