Hornets take loss to Eagleville in district semis

The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Eagleville Eagles 70-57 at Cornersville High Wednesday in a semifinal game for the District 9A tournament.

After a close first half, the Eagles pulled away in the last two quarters to give the Hornets a loss to begin postseason play.

The Hornets led for a majority of the first quarter, but the Eagles scored the last four points of the period to take a slight lead.

Huntland trailed 11-10 after one quarter.

The Hornets trailed by as many as seven points in the second quarter before scoring 10 straight to take the lead.

However, the Eagles answered back by scoring the last six points of the half to put the Hornets behind by a score of 25-22 at halftime. Zeier Golden scored seven of Huntland’s 12 points in the second quarter.

The Eagles doubled their point total in the third quarter with the deficit peaking at 18 points midway through the period before the Hornets chipped away some of the deficit.

Huntland trailed 50-38 going into the final period.

The deficit remained at double digits for the entire fourth quarter as the Hornets weren’t able to make up any ground before losing by 13.

Golden led the Hornets with 19 points for the game, followed by Braylen Phillips with 16 points and Lashawn Kimmons with 10.

Eli Wiggs scored eight points and Trace Kilpatrick scored four.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 14-14 on the season.

They will next play Saturday against Moore County High School at Cornersville in the third-place game for the District 9A tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
