Lady Hornets top Moore County for district title

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Moore County Raiderettes 62-54 at Cornersville Friday in the championship game for the District 9A tournament.

The Lady Hornets jumped out to an early lead, pulled away in the third quarter and held off a rally attempt in the final period to claim their fourth district title in seven seasons.

The Lady Hornets opened the contest with a 10-2 run to establish an early advantage over the rival Raiderettes. Logan McLennan scored nine of Huntland’s 14 points in the first quarter.

They led 14-6 after one quarter.

The Lady Hornets maintained a steady lead throughout the second quarter as they continued to stay in front by multiple possessions. Jocy May scored six of Huntland’s 11 points in the second quarter.

They led 25-17 at halftime.

The Lady Hornets scored the first 13 points of the third quarter to grow the deficit to double digits for the first time in the contest as they pushed their lead up to more than 20 points.

They led 42-20 going into the final period.

The Raiderettes chipped away at the deficit throughout the fourth quarter and made it a seven-point game in the final minute, but the Lady Hornets didn’t let them get any closer as they held on to win by eight.

McLennan led the Lady Hornets with 24 points for the game, followed by May with 16 points and Ashtyn Danley with 13.

Yareli Avalos scored six points, Morgan Sanders scored two and Aysia Williams scored one.

Following the conclusion of the game, McLennan, May and Avalos were named to the all-district team for the season.

May and Danley were named to the all-tournament team, and McLennan was recognized as the MVP of the District 9A tournament.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 21-11 on the season.

They will next play Friday at home against Culleoka High School in a quarterfinal game for the Region 5A tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
