The Huntland Middle School Lady Hornets beat the Cascade Lady Champions 6-1 at home Friday for their first win of the season.

The Lady Hornets took the lead in the first inning and maintained a steady advantage for the rest of the day behind a strong pitching performance from starter Isabella Smith.

Smith opened the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Millie Walker. After Lily Jackson drew a walk of her own, she stole second with a fielding error on the throw allowing Smith to sprint home for the first run of the contest.

Emily Stewart followed with a deep drive to left field which turned into an inside-the-park home run to bring herself and Jackson across home plate as the early lead grew to 3-0.

The Lady Champions put runners at the corners with one out in the top of the second, and their lead runner scored on a steal of home during a successful double steal to put the score at 3-1.

Stewart brought the lead back up to three in the bottom of the third with an RBI double, and she later scored off of an error on a ball hit by Abigail Denton to make it a 5-1 game.

Stewart added another big hit in the bottom of fifth as she drove a pitch over the fence in right-center field for her second home run of the day as the lead grew to five runs.

The Lady Champions wouldn’t be able to answer back in the last two innings as the Lady Hornets went on to win by five.

Smith pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with 10 strikeouts, two hits and one run allowed for the day.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 1-1 on the season.

They will next play on March 21 at Liberty Middle School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
