Middle school tracksters compete in Manchester meet
The track and field teams of North and South competed in a meet Monday at the Coffee County Raider Academy.
The North tracksters recorded 15 first-place finishes and 10 second-place finishes for the day. The South tracksters were close behind with 10 first-place performances and 11 placements in second for the meet.
The North Gators and Gatorettes finished first in both team standings as the Gatorettes won the girls title with 63 points compared to South’s 52, and the Gators’ 63 points trumped the South Trojans’ 51 for first place in the boys rankings.

The track and field teams of North and South will next compete on Tuesday at Tullahoma High School. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Middle school Hornets top Trojans in cross-county matchup
The Huntland Middle School Hornets beat the South Trojans 11-6 at the Winchester City Park Monday in a cross-county contest between the two baseball programs.
The score was tied through the first five innings with the Hornets taking the lead and pulling away in the sixth to secure their first win of the season.
The Hornets put up a pair of runs in the top of the first as an RBI single by Braydon Fanning and an RBI double by Parker Schultz gave them an early 2-0 advantage.
The Trojans got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first off of an RBI single by Ayden Hodosi.
The Hornets added another run to their early lead in the top of the third when Evan Goode came through with a two-out RBI single to make it a 3-1 game.
However, the Trojans flipped the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with an RBI double by Hodosi and a two-run groundout by Levi Lindsey giving them a 4-3 lead.
The back-and-forth action continued in the top of the fourth with Bryant Mooney hitting a sacrifice fly to tie the score and Fanning following with a two-run single to give Huntland a 6-4 advantage.
Hodosi collected his third RBI hit of the day in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run single by him tying the score at 6-6 at the game’s midway point.
The score remained tied until the top of the sixth when Schultz hit a go-ahead RBI single for the Hornets. Eli Fitch, Kasen Kildoo and Luke Yarbrough followed with bases-loaded walks later in the frame to bring in one run each and give the Hornets a 10-6 advantage.
The final run of the contest would be scored in the top of the seventh when Lucas Freeman drew a walk with the bases loaded to put the final margin of victory at five.
Tyler Guess pitched the first three innings for the Hornets with two strikeouts, five hits, two earned runs and two unearned runs allowed.
Kildoo came on in relief for the last four innings with two strikeouts, one hit, one earned run and one unearned run.
Avery Jackson started the game for the Trojans and pitched the first four innings with four strikeouts, eight hits, three earned runs and three unearned runs allowed.
Lindsey pitched one inning in relief with one strikeout, two hits and four runs allowed.
Ryder Greer recorded two outs in relief with no hits and no runs allowed, and Lane Blevins pitched the final 1 1-13 innings with two strikeouts, no hits and one run allowed.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 1-5 on the season.
They will next play Thursday at home against South Middle School. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
With the loss, the Trojans moved to 2-4 on the season.
The Trojans returned to action on Tuesday with a 13-3 loss to the Coffee County Raiders on the road.
The Raiders scored at least one run in every inning as the game came to an end early through the mercy rule.
The Trojans got the first run of the day on an RBI single by Cameron Denton in the top of the first.
However, the Raiders scored three runs in the bottom of the first and four in the second to quickly put South in a 7-1 hole.
The Trojans made up some ground on a two-run single by Denton in the top of the third, but the Raiders countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third to make it a 9-3 game.
The Raiders concluded the game with one run in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to put the final deficit at 10.
With the loss, the Trojans moved to 2-5 on the season.
They will next play Thursday at Huntland Middle School. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Gators rout Community in road contest
The North Middle School Gators beat the Community Vikings 10-2 on the road Monday for their first win of the season.
The Gators opened up a big lead in the first two innings and never looked back to break into the win column.
Preston Steele got the scoring started with a two-run double in the top of the first for North.
The Gators added on to their lead in the top of the second as an RBI double by Elijah Dorrell, a sacrifice fly by Easton Walker, an RBI single by Kyran Peace and a two-run single by Colson Kelley gave them a 7-0 lead early in the contest.
The Vikings chipped away a portion of the deficit with one run each in the bottom of the third and fourth innings.
However, the Gators pulled back ahead with a trio of runs in the top of the sixth as Walker scored on a steal of home and Bryce Waldow hit a two-run single to set the final deficit at eight.
Konner Lively pitched the first three innings for the Gators with three strikeouts, four hits and one run allowed.
Isaac Winton recorded two outs in relief with one strikeout, no hits and one run allowed, and Kelley pitched the final 1 1-3 innings with four strikeouts, no hits and no runs allowed.
With the win, the Gators improved to 1-4 on the season.
They will next play Thursday in a home doubleheader against Harris Middle School. First pitch for the first game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Lady Hornets blow out Liberty for road victory
The Huntland Middle School Lady Hornets beat the Liberty Lady Patriots 14-4 on the road Tuesday for their second win of the season.
All of the scoring for the game was done in the third and fourth innings as the Lady Hornets pulled away to end the contest early.
After two hitless innings to start the day, the Lady Hornets broke through for a quintet of runs in the top of the third.
Isabella Smith got the scoring started with an RBI single, followed by a two-run double by Millie Walker and consecutive RBI singles by Lily Jackson and Emily Stewart.
The Lady Patriots answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to put the score at 5-2.
The Lady Hornets put together a nine-run fourth inning with the scoring coming from an RBI single by Natalyn Bolin, a sacrifice fly by Smith, an RBI single by Walker, an RBI double by Stewart, an RBI single by Lynsey Jakubowski, a two-run double by Bolin in her second at-bat of the frame and a two-run single by Smith.
The Lady Patriots were able to score another two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lady Hornets kept their advantage at double digits as they won by 10.
Smith pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with eight strikeouts, four hits and four runs allowed in the victory.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 2-1 on the season.
They will next play Thursday at Fayetteville Middle School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
FC Middle Rebels tie with Avery Trace at home
The Franklin County Middle Rebels played the Avery Trace Raiders to a 1-1 draw at home Monday for their first tie of the season.
The Rebels were playing without multiple starters against stiff competition, but they were still able to finish with a tie in the competitive matchup.
The lone score of the day for Franklin County came on a shot by Garrett Thompson off of an assist by Giovanni Mendez. It was Thompson’s second goal of the season for Franklin County.
FC Middle head boys soccer coach Matthew Parkerson said that the Raiders were the best team his squad has gone up against them so far, and the teams were roughly even in terms of possession time, shots and opportunities on free sets.
With the draw, the Rebels moved to 3-0-1 on the season.
They will next play Thursday at Tullahoma Middle School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
