Lady Hornets split first two games for New Hope Classic

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Priceville Lady Bulldogs 6-1 at the Owens Cross Roads Recreation Center in Alabama Friday in their second game for the New Hope Classic.
The Lady Bulldogs pulled away in the third and fourth innings with the game ending before the start of the fifth due to the time limit for the tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs got the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout.
The Lady Hornets answered back quickly as Ashtyn Danley hit an RBI single in the top of the second to tie the early score at 1-1, but the Lady Bulldogs retook the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.
The Lady Hornets threatened to score in the top of the fourth when Hazel Reed and Blair Finchum led off the frame with singles and were moved up to third and second base, respectively, by a sacrifice bunt from Kinah Mason.
However, Reed and Finchum wouldn’t advance any further as the Lady Hornets continued to trail by two.
The Lady Bulldogs expanded their advantage with a three-run triple in the bottom of the fourth, and the time limit expired shortly thereafter as the Lady Hornets lost by five.
Mason pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with one strikeout, eight hits, three earned runs and three unearned runs allowed.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 5-2 on the season.
Lady Hornets 2, Madison Academy 0
The Lady Hornets opened their day at the New Hope Classic Friday with a 2-0 victory over the Madison Academy Mustangs.
The Lady Hornets took an early lead and rode a shutout pitching performance from Danley to a victory from there.
The Lady Hornets scored their first run in the bottom of the first when Danley drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a single by Hadley Gardner and scored off of an error on a ball hit by DeAnna Burton.
The score remained at 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Hadley Gardner hit a two-out RBI double to increase Huntland’s lead to two.
Danley closed out the game from there as the time limit for the contest ran out after the top of the fifth.
Danley pitched a complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts and two hits allowed in the victory.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 5-1 on the season.
They will resume play on Saturday in the New Hope Classic with first pitch for their first game of the day scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
