The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Fayetteville Lady Tigers 12-2 at home Monday for their seventh win of the season.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to a big early lead in the first few innings and were able to cruise from there to a district victory to start the week.
Huntland head softball coach Michael Tipps said the win was a team effort with contributions from the Lady Hornets’ entire roster.
“What we struggled with this weekend, we finally got back to hitting it a little bit better,” he said. “We could’ve put it away in five innings, but (Fayetteville) tends to get a couple of runs. We got everybody in the game, and everybody got an at-bat. I was pleased with the day.”
The Lady Hornets struck for their first run of the day in the bottom of the first as DeAnna Burton hit an RBI single to score Hadley Gardner from third base.
The Lady Hornets followed that with six runs in the bottom of the second as Kinah Mason got the scoring started with a two-run double.
Ashtyn Danley added a two-run single a few batters later, and errors on balls hit by Burton and Camerin Davis led to one run each to grow the early deficit to 7-0.
The Lady Hornets continued to grow their lead in the bottom of the third as consecutive RBI doubles by Danley and Gardner made it a 9-0 game.
Mason brought the deficit up to an even 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth off of an RBI fielder’s choice as the Lady Hornets began to rotate their backups into the game.
The Lady Tigers scored one run each in the fifth and sixth innings to briefly extend the game, but RBI doubles by Morgan Sanders and Blair Finchum scored one run each in the bottom of the sixth to end the game slightly early as the Lady Hornets won by 10.
Danley pitched three hitless innings to open the game for the Lady Hornets as she exited the game with seven strikeouts.
Mason came on in relief for the remaining three innings with two strikeouts, three hits and two unearned runs allowed.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 7-3 on the season and 2-0 in district play.
They will next play Tuesday at Moore County High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
