Rebels hold off Shelbyville for home district win

The Franklin County Rebels beat the Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles 4-3 at home Monday for their fifth win of the season.

The Rebels rallied from an early deficit to tie the score in the fifth inning and take the lead in the sixth before holding off the Golden Eagles in the final frame of the district contest.

The Golden Eagles scored all three of their runs in the top of the first as their offense was helped along by a few early errors from the Rebels.

The Rebels made up a small amount of ground in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Payton Miller to make it a 3-1 game early.

The score remained steady until the bottom of the fifth when Austin Roberts, Miller and Gus Gardner each hit singles to load the bases with nobody out. Lowe followed by drawing a walk to allow Roberts to trot home from third base, and Casen Gilliam added an RBI single to tie the score at 3-3.

The Rebels then took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the sixth as Sam Vincent hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Roberts, moved to third on an error and ultimately scored on a wild pitch.

The Golden Eagles got their leadoff batter in the top of the seventh on base with an error to start the frame and moved that potential tying run to third base with a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, but Vincent recorded the final out he needed on the mound to clinch the one-run victory.

Vincent pitched a complete game for the Rebels with seven strikeouts, four hits, one earned run and two unearned runs allowed.

With the win, the Rebels improved to 5-3 on the season and 1-2 in district play.

They will next play Tuesday at Shelbyville Central High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
