The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Cornersville Bulldogs 13-12 on the road Tuesday for their eighth loss of the season.

The Hornets scored a majority of their runs in the first inning, but the Bulldogs rallied past them in the middle innings with a late comeback effort from Huntland coming up just short.

The Hornets put up nine runs in the top of the first with Blaine Counts getting the scoring started with an RBI single.

Caydon Bradford and Kannon Lafevers contributed RBI singles for one run each, followed by Matthew Dickson drawing a bases-loaded walk for another run. Eli Wiggs and Evan Keller added consecutive RBI singles, Dickson scored off of an error on a ball hit by Trace Morris, and Counts hit a two-run single in his second at-bat of the inning to round out the scoring.

The Bulldogs began to make up ground quickly as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first and three runs in the second to make it a 9-8 game early.

The Hornets scored another run in the top of the third when Morris scored off of an error on a ball hit by Jed Ashley, but a three-run frame in the bottom of the third flipped the scoreboard in Connersville’s favor by a score of 11-10.

Both offenses went quiet in the fourth inning before the Bulldogs scored another two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 13-10 game.

The Hornets chipped away a small portion of the deficit on an RBI single by Wiggs in the top of the sixth to put the score at 13-11 going into the final frame.

Counts led off the top of the seventh with a double and would be driven in two batters later on an RBI double by Bradford. Bradford advanced to third on a groundout by Landon Kerr, but he would be stranded there as the Hornets lost by one.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 6-8 on the season and 3-3 in district play.

They will next play Saturday at Lincoln County High School. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
