The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Warren County Lady Pioneers 6-4 at Dave King Park Friday in their first game for the Coffee County Classic.

The score was close for most of the day with a four-run fifth inning by the Lady Pioneers proving to be the deciding factor in Huntland’s loss.

The Lady Hornets recorded the first run of the contest in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by DeAnna Burton to bring Bailey Morris around to score from second base.

However, the Lady Pioneers quickly tied the score with their first run in the top of the fourth, and they went on to push four more runs across in the fifth inning to put the Lady Hornets in a 5-1 hole.

The Lady Hornets were able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth as Hadley Gardner hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run to put the score at 5-3.

The Lady Pioneers scored their final run in the top of the sixth as their leadoff batter in the frame singled and came all the way around to score during the same play after an error.

The Lady Hornets chipped the deficit back down to two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Blair Finchum hit into an RBI groundout, but the time limit for the game ran out before the seventh inning could be played as they lost by two.

Kinah Mason pitched the first five innings for the Lady Hornets with five strikeouts, eight hits and six runs allowed.

Kenzie McCowan entered the game in relief and recorded the last three outs with no hits and no runs allowed.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 13-5 on the season.

They will next play Saturday in two more games for the Coffee County Classic at Dave King Park. They are scheduled to play Wilson Central at 10 a.m. and Stewarts Creek at 11:50 a.m.
