The Huntland High School Hornets beat the Huntsville Falcons 14-0 at home Tuesday for their seventh win of the season.
The Hornets were in complete control on both sides of the ball throughout the game as they wrapped up the victory in five innings to end a five-game losing streak.
Huntland head baseball coach Brent Davis praised his team’s play for the day in all three phases of the game.
“We played really clean in the field tonight, and that’s what we’ve got to have. We had some kids making plays that weren’t routine plays, but we made routine ones as well, and it allowed Trace (Morris) to just focus on what he was doing on the mound,” he said before talking about his squad’s offensive performance. “We just went up there swinging and were able to put a bunch of runs on the board.”
The Hornets put up six runs in the bottom of the first as Evan Keller got the scoring started with an RBI single, and Jed Ashley followed with an RBI single of his own a few batters later.
Morris came around to score off of a fielding error on a ball hit by Landon Kerr, Daltyn Howell drew a bases-loaded walk and Eli Wiggs hit a two-run single to round out the scoring in the opening frame.
The Hornets added another run in the bottom of the second as Ashley raced home on a wild pitch to make it a 7-0 game early.
The Hornets doubled their advantage with seven runs in the bottom of the third as the scoring in the inning began with Matthew Dickson drawing a bases-loaded walk for an RBI. Blaine Counts followed with an RBI single, and Kerr drew another bases-loaded walk to make it a 10-0 game.
The Hornets weren’t done scoring in the inning as Caydon Bradford hit a two-run single, Wiggs contributed an RBI single of his own and Morris added an RBI triple to make it a 14-run game.
The Hornets maintained a shutout on defense the rest of the way as the game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Morris pitched the first four innings for the Hornets with four strikeouts and two hits allowed to get the victory.
Wiggs closed out the final inning in relief with one strikeout and one hit allowed.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 7-12 on the season.
They will next play Wednesday at Cascade High School. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
