Members of the Franklin County High School boys and girls track and field teams competed in the Section 2AAA championship meet Tuesday at Stewarts Creek High School.
The top four finishers in each event received berths to the Class AAA state meet with seven Franklin County athletes meeting that qualifying standard across six events.
Kahlynia Vanzant led the way for Franklin County as she qualified for the state meet in the girls 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.
Vanzant took first place in the 200 for the meet as her final time of 25.11 seconds put her 0.17 seconds ahead of Cleveland’s Charice Ryan for the top spot.
Vanzant also recorded a third-place finish in the 100 as she completed the event in 12.36 seconds. She finished just 0.02 seconds behind Cleveland’s Ryan for first place in the hotly contested event.
The boys 4×100-meter relay team of Eric Jones, Coastlon Ringer, Na’Zaiyah Holman and NaShawn Holman punched their ticket to the state meet as a group as they finished fourth in their event while also setting a new school record with a time of 42.55 seconds.
NaShawn Holman also earned a berth to the state meet as an individual in the boys 200-meter dash with his time of 21.68 seconds breaking a school record for the event and putting him just 0.01 seconds ahead of Nolensville’s Sterling Weldon for fourth place and the final qualifying spot.
Franklin County had two state qualifiers in the field events as Lily Heath claimed a berth with a fourth-place finish in the girls triple jump. Heath’s longest leap of 32 feet, 2.5 inches beat Walker Valley’s Emma Argauer’s best mark by 0.5 inches to advance her to the next round.
Abby Phrommala also clinched a spot in the state meet as she finished in a tie for fourth with Rockvale’s Julia Peebles in the girls pole vault. Phrommala and Peebles both cleared the bar at 7 feet, 6 inches and had the same marks in each round, creating a situation where both will advance to the state meet.
