The Franklin County High School boys soccer team beat the Warren County Pioneers 4-0 at Puett Field in Sewanee Tuesday in a semifinal game for the District 6AAA tournament.
Franklin County’s offense built up an early lead while the defense recorded its sixth shutout of the season to advance the team to the district championship game.
Franklin County head soccer coach Kent Bean said it was a good game for his team despite some missed opportunities on offense.
“We scored a couple early and kind of teetered off, but that’s what we talked about, just playing relaxed,” he said. “I’m happy with the guys. We probably could have hit a couple more (shots) there, and we’ll talk about being a little bit more open to finding somebody in front of the goal instead of shooting.”
The first goal for Franklin County came about six minutes into the contest as Rylan Banks received a through pass from Kevin Hernandez and outran the defense before firing a shot into the net to give his team the lead.
Franklin County was awarded a penalty kick with 18 minutes remaining in the first half after Warren County’s goalkeeper ran into Hernandez in the goal box, and Banks buried the attempt in the back of the net for his second goal of the day and his 11th of the season.
Hernandez added on to the early lead with about eight minutes remaining in the first half as he fired a shot which deflected off of the opposing goalkeeper, recovered the rebounding ball and hit the net with his second attempt to make it a 3-0 game.
Franklin County led 3-0 at halftime.
Franklin County added one more goal in the second half as Hernandez received a corner kick from Josiah Cruz with a header and knocked the ball into the net with 15 minutes remaining for his second goal of the contest. The goal was the 21st of the season for Hernandez.
Franklin County goalkeeper Octavio Martinez and his defense were able to secure the shutout the rest of the way as Franklin County won by four.
With the win, Franklin County improved to 11-3 on the season.
The boys soccer team will next play Thursday at home against Shelbyville Central High School in the District 6AAA championship game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
