Little League players from Winchester, Estill Springs and Cowan competed in the District 8 12U and 11U all-star tournaments Friday and Saturday in Tullahoma.
Both tournaments were held at Waggoner Park with the two 12U teams and one 11U team for the county each being eliminated on Saturday.
The Winchester 12U players got off to a strong start Friday with a 2-0 victory over Tullahoma in the first round of their bracket.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Winchester’s Cooper Knight came around to score on an error, and Odeviyon Poe hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to double the late lead.
Winchester pitcher Colby Shepherd carried a no-hitter into the top of the sixth which was broken up by a one-out single, but he struck out the next two batters to finish the complete-game shutout.
Winchester 12U found itself in another pitcher’s duel on Saturday morning with the team taking a 3-0 loss to Spring Hill.
Spring Hill pushed one run each across in the second, third and fourth innings to take control of the game early. On the other side, Winchester recorded at least one hit in every inning, but the team wasn’t able to string them together for a run in the loss.
Winchester 12U then had a rematch with Tullahoma in an elimination game later on Saturday with Winchester falling by a score of 8-3.
Tullahoma struck for three runs in the top of the first to jump out to an early advantage that would last for the rest of the day. Connor Worley drew a bases-loaded walk to put Winchester on the board in the top of the fourth, but one run by Tullahoma in the bottom half of the frame and another four runs in the fifth put Winchester in an 8-1 hole late.
Winchester forced two more runs across on a sacrifice fly by Luke Hyden and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Worley, but it wouldn’t be enough to avoid the loss by five.
Cowan/Estill Springs 12U opened the bracket with a 20-0 loss to Columbia Friday to fall down to the lower bracket.
Jeremiah Reno collected the lone hit for Cowan/Estill Springs in the bottom of the fourth with Columbia putting up runs in every frame to secure the decisive victory.
Cowan/Estill Springs 12U then played Tullahoma in an elimination game on Saturday afternoon and lost by a score of 12-2.
Channing Amacher hit a two-run double in the top of the first to give Cowan/Estill Springs an early edge, but Tullahoma scored one run each in the first, second and third innings to take a 3-2 lead. A nine-run frame by Tullahoma in the bottom of the fourth triggered the mercy rule to eliminate Cowan/Estill Springs from contention.
In the 11U bracket, Winchester began competition on Friday with a 17-1 loss to Columbia.
The lone run for Winchester in the contest came on an RBI groundout by Justice Tyler in the bottom of the first while Columbia scored multiple runs in every frame to end the game after three innings.
Winchester 11U then matched up with Tullahoma in an elimination semifinal game Saturday and took a 6-3 loss to be eliminated.
Winchester struck first on the scoreboard as Dean Hawkins scored on an error in the bottom of the first. However, Tullahoma tied the score in the top of the second and pushed five runs across in the top of the third to take a solid 6-1 advantage.
Winchester chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the fourth as Tyler hit an RBI double to score Bently Wunderlin, and Peyton Mason scored on the same play off of an error to make it a three-run game, but Winchester was held scoreless the rest of the way to seal the loss by three.
The members of the Winchester 12U team were Connor Worley, Colton Cox, Luke Hyden, Cooper Knight, Brennan Taylor, Jacob Luong, Colby Shepherd, Lane Blevins, Wyatt Reed, Odeviyon Poe, Ryder Greer and Grayson Ikard.
