Decherd Fire Department welcomes new engine

The Decherd Fire Department opened its doors to the public to witness a traditional engine push-in and to tour the department on June 24.

Guests could look inside the station’s multiple fire trucks, meet the firefighters, view the work and living quarters and learn about the station. Refreshments were also provided.

Decherd’s Station No. 1 has acquired a new engine with Chief Chuck Williams describing the process as detailed and tedious.

“It can take 18-24 months to get a new truck, and a lot goes into it,” he said, adding that the firemen are extremely proud of the newly acquired vehicle and wanted to celebrate the occasion with the special push-in ceremony.

A push-in ceremony is a symbolic ceremony to welcome a new engine, Williams said, adding that it is a nod to a time in the early 19th century when fire wagons drawn by horses had to be pushed backward into a firehouse to park.

After Williams spoke, the Decherd firemen collectively pushed the new vehicle backward into the station.

“To my knowledge, this is the first ceremony for a new truck and new equipment at this station,” Williams said.
