The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Cascade Lady Champions 1-0 on the road Monday for their second win of the season.
The Lady Hornets scored the lone goal they needed midway through the first half and held on from there for a shutout victory in the district contest.
Huntland head soccer coach Amanda Tipps said she was pleased to get another district victory to start the year in a tough game which included her team playing with an 11-on-10 disadvantage for the last 10 minutes.
“That was a super physical game, so I’m glad to come out with a win,” she said before referring to the late disadvantage for her team. “That’s kind of a tough situation to put yourself in, but I feel like our defense definitely stepped up and was able to maintain that (lead) for the last bit. They did a good job.”
The only score of the game on either side came with about 15 minutes remaining in the first half as Hazel Reed sent a pass across the goal box to Piper Cox, and Cox fired a shot into the net from there for her second goal of the season.
The Lady Hornets led 1-0 at halftime.
The game became increasingly more physical as it continued with multiple fouls being called on both teams.
Huntland forward Bristol Moon would be disqualified from the game with about 10 minutes to go after receiving her second yellow card of the contest as the Lady Hornets would be forced to compete with a one-player disadvantage for the rest of the day.
The Lady Champions launched a series of attacks on Huntland’s goal immediately afterward, but Huntland goalkeeper Molly Tipps and the defense in front of her kept Cascade off the board until the final whistle blew.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 2-0 on the season.
They will next play Thursday at home against Forrest High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
