FC girls soccer teams compete in Smoky Mountain Cup

The Franklin County High School varsity and JV girls soccer teams competed in the Smoky Mountain Cup over the weekend at Rocky Top Sports World in Gatlinburg.
Franklin County’s varsity squad ended the event with a record of 1-2 while the JV Franklin County team went 1-1 on the field and picked up a forfeit victory to close out the tournament.
The Franklin County varsity team opened the event with a 3-0 victory over the White House Blue Devils on Friday.
The first goal of the day came on a shot by Cali Banks off an assist from Sadie Moore to give Franklin County a lead in the first half. It was the fourth goal of the season for Banks.
Franklin County led 1-0 at halftime.
Baylor Russell added to the Franklin County lead in the second half as she scored off an assist from Osiris Rodriguez, and the duo worked together for another goal later in the contest with Rodriguez scoring off a pass from Russell this time.
Rodriguez has eight goals so far this season for Franklin County.
Franklin County’s defense held the Blue Devils off the board for the rest of the game to secure a victory to start the weekend.
Franklin County’s next game on the varsity side of the tournament was a 2-0 loss to the Bartlett Lady Panthers Saturday.
The Lady Panthers scored both of their goals in the first half to put Franklin County in an early hole.
Franklin County’s players created pressure on the opposing goal throughout the contest, but none of their shots would find the net as the team took its first loss of the year overall.
Franklin County’s varsity team concluded the event with a 2-1 loss to the Conner Lady Panthers on Sunday.
The teams were evenly matched early in the physical contest as the score was tied at 0-0 going into the halftime break.
The Lady Panthers broke the scoreless tie about 15 minutes into the second half and scored again on a free kick with about seven minutes left to put Franklin County behind by a score of 2-0.
Franklin County was able to avoid another shutout loss as a shot from Rodriguez deflected off the opposing goalkeeper and found the feet of Russell who fired it back into the net with three minutes left for her second goal of the season.
However, Franklin County wouldn’t be able to score again in the brief time remaining as the team lost by one.
Franklin County’s varsity team finished third out of six teams in the Mount LeConte division for the Smoky Mountain Cup.
The Conner and Frederick Douglass girls soccer teams both finished undefeated in the pool with Frederick Douglass taking the top spot overall due to a superior goal differential.
With the results from the tournament, Franklin County moved to 5-2 on the season.
Franklin County’s JV team opened play on Friday with a 3-1 loss to the Paul Laurence Dunbar Lady Bulldogs.
Gracen Baggett provided the lone score of the day for Franklin County as the team started the weekend off with its only loss.
The Franklin County JV team returned to play on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over the Jackson-Reed Lady Tigers.
After a scoreless first half, Riley Howell gave Franklin County the lead in the second half off an assist from Aubrey Smith for what would be the only goal of the contest.
The JV Franklin County players wouldn’t get a chance to play a third game as Jefferson County forfeited its Sunday contest against them to give Franklin County a 3-0 win by default.
Franklin County’s JV team finished third out of six teams in the JV Showcase division with Page High School taking first place with a perfect 3-0 record for the tournament.
The Franklin County varsity girls soccer team will next play Tuesday at home against Chattanooga Christian School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
