Middle school Hornets trounce Blanche for home victory

The Huntland Middle School Hornets beat the Blanche Bulldogs 48-20 at home Tuesday for their fourth win of the season.
The Hornets scored all of their points in the first half and remained in complete control for the rest of the day as they recorded their third straight victory.
The Hornets opened the game with a 61-yard touchdown drive which ended in a rushing score by Bryant Mooney. Mooney also scored on the ensuing two-point conversion to make it an 8-0 game less than two minutes into the contest.
An onside kick by the Hornets was recorded by Coby Martin to give the ball right back to Huntland, and Mooney again scored a rushing touchdown and added a two-point conversion to put the early deficit at 16-0 with 2:39 left in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs were forced to punt on their first possession with Mooney returning the kick down to Blanche’s 22-yard line.
Adon Bass ran the ball into the end zone for the Hornets a few plays later, and Mooney recorded another successful two-point conversion to push their advantage to 24-0 one play into the second quarter.
The Bulldogs returned the ensuing kickoff 61 yards for a touchdown to get on the board and make it a 24-6 game.
Bass then broke off a long kick return of his own to start the next Huntland drive on Blanche’s 14-yard line.
The Hornets scored their next touchdown through the air as Bass found Martin with a pass in the end zone with 7:25 left in the second quarter. Martin also carried the ball into the end zone on the two-point conversion to bring the score to 32-6.
A turnover on downs by Blanche was immediately followed by a Huntland interception to give them the ball back, but the Bulldogs were ultimately forced to punt on the ensuing possession.
Mooney then broke free for his third rushing touchdown of the day and followed that with another two-point conversion to put the deficit at 40-6 with three minutes left in the first half.
The Bulldogs made it inside of Huntland’s 10-yard line on their next drive, but the Hornets made the defensive stop with a fumble being recovered by Bass for a turnover.
A long run by Bass out to midfield was followed by Mooney’s fourth touchdown run with one minute remaining in the first half as Bass added a two-point conversion after the score to put the Hornets ahead by more than 40 points.
They led 48-6 at halftime.
The Hornets rotated their backups into the game to start the second half with the Bulldogs taking advantage by scoring a rushing touchdown in the opening minute of the third quarter to make it a 48-14 game.
After a Huntland punt, the Bulldogs drove down and scored another touchdown on a passing play to put the score at 48-20 with 6:27 left in the contest.
Neither team would be able to score any more points in the time remaining as the Hornets won by 28.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 4-2 on the season.
They will next play Tuesday at Flintville Middle School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
