Gilliam receives Outstanding Alumnus Award from Belmont
Belmont University’s School of Physical Therapy recently presented the highest honor it bestows upon former student as Dr. Brandon Gilliam was the recipient of the 2023 Outstanding Alumnus Award.
Dr. Michael Voight, a professor at the school, said: “Brandon’s success reminds us that excellence is not a determination but a journey, and our legacy is not just what we leave behind, but how we pave the way for those who follow. This award is our way of acknowledging Brandon’s journey.”
The presentation took place at McAfee Concert Hall on Belmont University’s campus. Gilliam graduated from Belmont in 2005 with a doctorate in physical therapy and returned nearly 20 years later to accept the prestigious award and address the Class of 2023.
“Success is not a solitary endeavor. Success requires a supporting cast,” Gilliam said. “I am honored to receive this award, but there are so many people that have supported me along the way that I would be remiss if I didn’t share this with them. This award is as much theirs as it is mine.”
Gilliam was recently named the athletic rehabilitation director/assistant athletic trainer for the Dallas Mavericks. Previously, he served as the director of rehabilitation for the Miami Heat (2014-2022) where he became a two-time Eastern Conference champion and participated in the NBA Finals two of the last four seasons.
Having a front-row seat to team success is nothing new for Gilliam. He served as a student athletic trainer for the University of Tennessee football teams that won back-to-back SEC championships and the 1998 national championship.
As a letterman, his name is engraved on the Lettermen’s Wall of Fame outside Neyland-Thompson Sports Center on the University of Tennessee campus.
Gilliam is the son of David and Karen Gilliam of Sewanee and is a 1996 graduate of Franklin County High School.
