The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Cascade Lady Champions 1-0 at The Webb School Thursday in the Region 5A championship game.
The Lady Hornets fell behind early in the second half and weren’t able to find an equalizer in the physical contest as they finished as the regional runners-up.
Huntland head soccer coach Amanda Tipps said her team played hard, but they struggled to find a consistent rhythm on offense.
“We just couldn’t connect anything. We just couldn’t seem to possess the ball enough to get much of an offensive attack,” she said. “Our defense played hard. They played most of the game. We just couldn’t seem to get it together.”
The Lady Champions kept the ball on Huntland’s side of the field throughout most of the first half, but the Lady Hornets’ defense held strong to keep them off the board for the period.
The game was tied at 0-0 at halftime.
However, the Lady Champions struck for a quick goal less than a minute into the second half to break the scoreless tie.
The Lady Hornets created a few offensive opportunities for themselves in the second half, but they weren’t able to break through for a tying score as they lost by one. It was the third shutout loss of the season for the Lady Hornets with the Lady Champions being responsible for two of those scoreless defeats.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 11-5 on the season.
They will next play Saturday at Westview High School in a sub-state game with a spot in the Class A state tournament on the line. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
