Middle school Hornets split first two games of season

The Huntland Middle School Hornets lost to the Community Vikings 54-33 on the road Monday for their first loss of the season.

The Hornets fell behind early in the contest with a lopsided third quarter ultimately putting the game out of reach to seal their defeat.

A 3-pointer from Micah Tipps gave the Hornets a 5-4 lead midway through the opening period, but the Vikings ended the quarter by scoring nine straight points.

Huntland trailed 13-5 after one quarter.

A 10-3 run by the Vikings to begin the second quarter put the Hornets behind by double digits, but they were able to cut into the deficit a bit before the first half ended.

Huntland trailed 25-15 at halftime.

The Vikings opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run which brought the deficit up to more than 20 points for the day.

The Hornets trailed 42-19 going into the final period.

Both teams cycled most of their starters out of the game in the fourth quarter with the Hornets making up a small amount of ground before losing by 21 points.

Tipps led the Hornets with 14 points for the game, followed by Bryant Mooney with six points and Adon Bass with four.

Davis Keith and Bryson Walker scored three points each, Bryant Walker scored two and Evan Goode scored one.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 1-1 on the season.

Hornets 53, Blanche 7

The Hornets beat the Blanche Bulldogs 53-7 at home Thursday in their first game of the season.

The Hornets dominated the game on both sides of the court as they began the year with a blowout victory.

The Hornets scored the last seven points of the opening period to create a decent early edge on the scoreboard.

They led 11-2 after one quarter.

The Hornets followed up by scoring the first 14 points of the second quarter for a cumulative run of 21 consecutive points which put the Bulldogs in a massive hole.

Huntland led 30-4 at halftime.

The Hornets continued to remain in complete control in the second half as the deficit grew to more than 30 points in the third quarter. Tipps scored eight of Huntland’s 12 points in the third quarter.

They led 42-7 going into the final period.

The Hornets didn’t allow any points to be scored against them in the fourth quarter while continuing to build on their lead as they went on to win by 46.

Tipps led the Hornets with 15 points for the game, followed by Mooney with 12 points and Bass with seven.

Keith scored six points, Goode scored five, Bryson Walker scored three, Rylan Mills and Kurtis Salas scored two points each, and Bryant Walker scored one point.

With the win, the Hornets started the season with a record of 1-0.

They will next play Monday at Flintville Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
