Middle school Hornets pull away early to beat WCA

The Huntland Middle School Hornets beat the Winchester Christian Academy Lions 42-27 at home Tuesday for their second win of the season.
The Hornets built up a big lead in the first half and were able to cruise from there for a decisive victory in the cross-county matchup.
The Hornets started the game with a 12-3 run to quickly establish a solid lead over their opposition. Bryant Mooney scored eight of Huntland’s 14 points in the first quarter.
They led 14-5 after one quarter.
The Hornets scored the first seven points of the second quarter to create a double-digit advantage that would last for the remainder of the contest.
They led 28-9 at halftime.
The Hornets ran a lineup with mostly backups on the court in the third quarter as the Lions made up some ground in the period. Micah Tipps, the lone starter on the court for Huntland in the period, scored five of the team’s eight points in the period.
Huntland led 36-21 going into the fourth quarter.
The teams traded a few baskets throughout the fourth quarter with the Hornets maintaining a steady edge and going on to win by 15 points.
Tipps led the Hornets with 10 points for the game, followed by Mooney with eight points and Evan Goode with six.
Davis Keith scored five points, Bryson Walker and Adon Bass scored four points each, Kurtis Salas scored three and Alex Paul scored two.
The Lions were led in scoring by Colton Cox with 10 points, followed by Wyatt Reed with six points and Nathaniel Dickson and Ryder Greer with four points each.
Rylan Parvin scored two points and Lane Blevins scored one.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 2-1 on the season.
They will next play Monday at Flintville Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
