Flag memorials put out for Veterans Day
With Veterans Day approaching on Saturday, motorists on Franklin County’s major thoroughfares will be taking notice of American Legion Post 44’s flag-and-cross tribute to honor local veterans with their service extending from the Revolutionary War to the modern day.
The Legion has placed 765 flags and crosses along major roadways that will remain there for two weeks with removal set for Nov. 17 and Nov. 18.
Ray Cobb, Post 44 commander, said a new addition has been made to the flag presentation.
“You will notice the Betsy Ross flags with 13 stars and thirteen stripes over some of the crosses,” he explained. “These are veterans who settled in Franklin County after the Revolutionary War.”
Cobb said the veterans back then were given a pension of $50 a month for eight years and a piece of property in the territory of Tennessee.
He said plans are to add 48 Revolutionary War veterans crosses and flags to the current 765 by Memorial Day 2024.
“If your church, Sunday school, club or other organization would like to participate in putting the crosses and flags in place, your help would be welcome,” he said. “To secure your cross and flag to be placed this coming Memorial Day, please call early.”
