Middle school Lady Hornets top WCA to end five-game skid

The Huntland Middle School Lady Hornets beat the Winchester Christian Academy Lady Lions 30-22 at home Thursday for their fourth win of the season.

The Lady Hornets opened up a big lead in the middle quarters and were able to cruise to a victory from there to snap their five-game losing streak.

The teams were even throughout the opening period with the score tied at 6-6 after one quarter. Julianna Shetters scored four of WCA’s six points in the first quarter.

The Lady Hornets allowed just one point in the second quarter on a free throw by Chloe Cunningham as they opened up a double-digit lead going into halftime.

Huntland led 17-7 at the end of the first half.

The Lady Hornets continued to grow their advantage in the third quarter as they brought the deficit up to an even 20 points going into the fourth quarter.

Huntland led 30-10 after three quarters.

The Lady Hornets cycled their backups into the game in the fourth quarter with the Lady Lions shutting Huntland out and more than doubling their point total in the period before ultimately losing by eight.

Catara Johnson led the Lady Hornets with 12 points for the game, followed by Abbey Mason with eight points and Addie Jackson with four.

Loralie Mason scored three points, Millie Walker scored two and Haylee Allen scored one.

The Lady Lions were led in scoring by Shetters with 10 points, followed by Alanta Cornett with six points and Mary Elizabeth Orr with four.

Cunningham scored two points.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 4-6 on the season.

They will next play Tuesday at South Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
