WCA Lions pull away early versus middle school Hornets

The Huntland Middle School Hornets lost to the Winchester Christian Academy Lions 35-9 at home Thursday for their sixth loss of the season.

The Lions opened up a big lead in the first half against a Huntland team playing without multiple starters and pulled further away after halftime to give the Hornets their third straight loss.

The Hornets were held scoreless in the opening period with the Lions taking advantage to jump ahead by a score of 8-0 in the first quarter.

The deficit continued to grow in the second quarter as the Lions more than doubled their early lead.

Huntland trailed 21-4 at halftime.

The third quarter would be more even between the two teams with the Lions adding a few more points to their advantage.

They led 28-8 going into the final period.

Micah Tipps hit a free throw to give the Hornets their only point in the fourth quarter as the Lions easily finished off the 26-point victory.

Colton Cox led the Lions with 15 points for the game, followed by Grayson Ikard and Lane Blevins with six points each.

Ryder Greer scored five points, Wyatt Reed scored two and Koi Boyd scored one.

The Hornets were led in scoring by Tipps with seven points, followed by Davis Keith with two points.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 4-6 on the season.

They will next play Tuesday at South Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
