Hornets take losses to Lebanon, Jackson County at Cascade

The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Jackson County Blue Devils 62-27 at Cascade Middle School Saturday for their second loss of the season.
The Hornets fell into a double-digit hole in the opening period and weren’t able to bounce back from the sizable early disadvantage in the decisive loss.
The Blue Devils got off to a fast start in the contest as they scored more than 20 points in the first quarter alone to put the Hornets way behind early.
Huntland trailed 23-5 after one quarter.
The Hornets were able to keep pace with the Blue Devils in the second quarter, but they weren’t able to make up any ground in the process. Landon Farmer scored eight of Huntland’s 13 points in the second quarter.
They trailed 37-18 at halftime.
The Blue Devils ended the third quarter on an 18-3 run to push the deficit up to more than 30 points going into the final period.
Huntland trailed 57-22 after three quarters.
The teams traded a few baskets in the fourth quarter with the Hornets ultimately taking a loss by 35 points.
Farmer led the Hornets with eight points for the game, followed by Grant Jernigan with six points and Caydon Bradford and Trace Kilpatrick with four points each.
Kannon Lafevers and Chandler Banks scored two points each, and Ellis Stewart scored one point.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 1-2 on the season.
Lebanon 61, Hornets 36
The Hornets lost to the Lebanon Blue Devils 61-36 at Cascade High School earlier in the day on Saturday for their first loss of the season.
The Hornets were outscored in each quarter as Lebanon steadily pulled away to give the Hornets a loss to start the day.
The Hornets jumped out to an 11-6 lead to start the contest before the Lebanon Blue Devils answered back with a 10-2 run to flip the scoreboard. Lafevers scored eight of Huntland’s 13 points in the first quarter.
Huntland trailed 16-13 after one quarter.
A 10-3 run by Lebanon to close out the second quarter also hurt the Hornets early as they fell behind by double digits going into halftime.
They trailed 29-19 at the end of the first half.
The deficit against the Hornets more than doubled in the third quarter as they went into the final period trailing by a score of 49-27. Bradford scored five of Huntland’s eight points in the third quarter.
The Hornets weren’t able to make a dent in the deficit in the fourth quarter as they took the loss by 25 points.
Bradford led the Hornets with 11 points for the game, followed by Lafevers with 10 points and Kilpatrick with eight.
Farmer scored four points, Jernigan scored two and Demetri Reed scored one.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 1-1 on the season.
They will next play Monday against Lincoln County High School at Cornersville High in a first-round game for a Thanksgiving tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
