Lady Hornets go 0-2 versus Silverdale, Jackson County at Cascade

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Jackson County Blue Devils 47-34 at Cascade Middle School Saturday for their third loss of the season.

The Lady Hornets rallied from an early double-digit deficit to tie the score midway through the third quarter, but the Blue Devils quickly regained their double-digit edge to leave Huntland winless for the weekend.

The Blue Devils opened the contest with a 14-2 run to put the Lady Hornets at a sizable disadvantage in the opening period. Maddie Burks scored six of Huntland’s eight points in the first quarter.

Huntland trailed 18-8 after one quarter.

The Lady Hornets began to bounce back by allowing just two total points in the second quarter while chipping away at the deficit on offense to make it a one-possession game. Yareli Avalos scored eight of Huntland’s nine points in the second quarter.

Huntland trailed 20-17 at halftime.

A 3-pointer from Huntland’s Stratton Davis tied the score at 24-24 with about five minutes remaining in the third quarter, but the Blue Devils proceeded to score the next 14 points to retake control of the game.

Huntland trailed 41-27 going into the final period.

The Lady Hornets were only able to make up a small amount of ground in the time remaining as they took the loss by 13 points.

Avalos led the Lady Hornets with 18 points for the game, followed by Burks with six points and Marley Phillips and Davis with three points each.

Aysia Williams scored two points, and Hazel Reed and Bailey Morris scored one point each.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 0-3 on the season.

Silverdale 62, Lady Hornets 39

The Lady Hornets lost to the Silverdale Baptist Academy Seahawks 62-39 at Cascade High School earlier in the day on Saturday for their second loss of the season.

After a back-and-forth opening period, the Lady Hornets weren’t able to keep pace with the Seahawks the rest of the way as they took a loss to start the day.

There were multiple lead changes and ties in the first quarter with a 3-pointer from the Seahawks with four seconds left in the period giving them a slight edge early.

Huntland trailed 15-12 after one quarter.

The Seahawks started the second quarter with an 11-4 run to create a decent amount of separation on the scoreboard with the Lady Hornets not being able to offer an offensive response.

Huntland trailed 31-18 at halftime. Avalos scored 11 of Huntland’s 18 points in the first half.

The deficit against the Lady Hornets grew by a few more points in the third quarter as they entered the final period trailing by a score of 49-32.

The Seahawks ended the contest on a 13-5 run to fully put the game out of reach as the Lady Hornets lost by 23.

Avalos led the Lady Hornets with 19 points for the game, followed by Davis with eight points and Kinsley Kilpatrick and Burks with five points each.

Emily Stewart scored two points.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 0-2 on the season.

They will next play Monday against Spring Hill High School at Cornersville High in a first-round game for a Thanksgiving tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
