Lady Hornets place fourth at Thanksgiving tourney

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs 59-46 on the road Wednesday in the third-place game for the Cornersville Thanksgiving Classic.
The teams were separated by three points or less at the end of each of the first three quarters, but the Lady Bulldogs nearly doubled their point total in the fourth quarter to pull away late.
The teams both got off to relatively slow starts on offense with the Lady Bulldogs taking a slight early advantage. Stratton Davis scored four of Huntland’s six points in the first quarter.
Huntland trailed 7-6 after one quarter.
The lead changed hands a few times in the second quarter with the Lady Bulldogs scoring the last five points of the period to put the Lady Hornets behind by a score of 21-18 at halftime.
The score remained tight throughout the third quarter with the Lady Hornets facing a one-possession deficit going into the final period.
They trailed 31-29 after three quarters.
A run of eight straight points by the Lady Bulldogs midway through the fourth quarter pushed the deficit up to double digits late, and the Lady Hornets weren’t able to make up ground for the rest of the day as they lost by 13.
The scoring for the fourth quarter included each team making five 3-pointers. The Lady Hornets hit nine total 3-pointers for the day while the Lady Bulldogs narrowly bested them in that category with 10 shots made from beyond the arc.
Davis led the Lady Hornets with 15 points for the game, followed by Marley Phillips with nine points and Bailey Morris with seven.
Kinsley Kilpatrick and Yareli Avalos scored six points each, and Aysia Williams scored three points.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 1-5 on the season.
They will next play Monday at home against Culleoka High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
