DES bomb threat deemed non-credible

The School System is reassuring the public that, despite a May 7 bomb threat at Decherd Elementary School that turned out to be non-credible, all proper precautions were followed to ensure safety.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our absolute highest priority,” Rachel Shields, district public relations supervisor, said. “We are grateful for the swift, professional response of the school resource officer and the seamless cooperation of the school’s administration team.

“Their vigilance ensures that our classrooms remain a secure place for learning.”

A bomb threat was reported to SRO Adam Isbell, and the incident was immediately investigated and handled by him and the school’s administration, according to a School System press release.

Following a comprehensive investigation, the threat was deemed non-credible.

“Upon receiving the report, school administration and the SRO acted immediately to follow established safety protocols,” the press release said. “At no time were students, faculty or staff in any physical danger.

“The investigation concluded that the school environment was and remains safe for continued operations.”

The press release said that the district understands that such incidents can cause significant concern within the community.

“We want to reassure parents and guardians that we take every threat seriously and will always act with an abundance of caution to protect our school family,” the press release said. “We also ask families to speak with their children about the importance of using safe and appropriate language at school. Statements or threats involving school safety are taken extremely seriously and can lead to significant school and legal consequences.

“Working together, we can ensure our schools remain a safe and supportive place for all students.”

The School System extended its gratitude to the Sheriff’s Office and Isbell for their partnership and to parents for their continued support in ensuring a safe environment is maintained for all students.
