Former teacher indicted for sexual battery

A former Franklin County High School teacher remains in jail after being indicted by a grand jury on charges of sexual battery by an authority figure and solicitation of a minor, according to Circuit Court records.

Herbert “Toby” Ely Maze Jr., who taught construction courses as a career and technical education instructor, was arrested on May 4 and remains in custody without bond until his court date on Friday, according to Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Court records state that the charges stem from alleged actions taken between September 2024 and March 23, 2026.

Court records state that Maze was in a “position of trust or had supervisory or disciplinary power over the victim by virtue of occupational status and used the position of trust or power to accomplish sexual contact.”

No other details stemming from the case have been released.
