Hornets take losses to Cascade, Sequatchie

The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Sequatchie County Indians 6-4 at home Friday for their sixth loss of the season.

The Hornets rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth after falling behind earlier in the inning, but the Indians took the lead for good in the top of the sixth to seal Huntland’s fifth straight loss.

The Hornets initially pulled ahead in the bottom of the third as Caleb Maxwell hit a two-out RBI double, and Bryant Mooney recorded a two-run home run immediately afterward to make it a 3-0 game.

However, the Indians then scored a run in the fourth inning to get on the board, and a three-run frame from Sequatchie County in the top of the fifth put Huntland in a 4-3 hole.

The Hornets opened the bottom of the fifth with three straight hits as singles from Caleb Maxwell and Mooney were followed by an RBI single from Kasen Kildoo to tie the score at 4-4.

The tie would then be broken in the top of the sixth as the Indians recorded an RBI single and an RBI groundout in the frame to retake the lead at 6-4.

Jed Ashley got hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but he was taken off the basepaths by a double play on the next pitch, and a strikeout then ended the game as the Hornets lost by two.

Parker Schultz pitched the first four innings for the Hornets with two strikeouts, three hits, four walks, one earned run and one unearned run allowed for the day.

Grant Jernigan pitched two innings in relief with one strikeout, three hits, two walks, two earned run and two unearned runs allowed.

Kildoo pitched a scoreless inning in relief with one hit allowed.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 11-6 on the season.

Cascade 10, Hornets 0

The Hornets lost to the Cascade Champions 10-0 on the road on April 13 for their fifth loss of the season.

The Hornets fell into a deep hole early in the contest and were limited to just one hit for the day offensively as they took their fourth straight defeat.

Huntland head baseball coach Brent Davis said that Cascade pitcher Jayden Hathcock did a good job of keeping his hitters off-balance in the game, and a few errors for his team proved costly on the other end of the ball.

“(Hathcock) threw the ball hard, he had good command, and he had good offspeed (pitches). As soon as batters started getting in their head and started guessing the pitches, we didn’t hit the way we know we can hit,” he said before referring to defensive miscues for his team. “We had four errors in one inning, and two of them were just throwing errors being silly with the ball. That gave them six runs, and a team like that is hard to come back with.”

Caleb Maxwell led off the top of the second with a single for what would be the only Huntland hit of the game, and he would be stranded at first base following two strikeouts and a flyout to end the inning.

The Champions had seven runners reach base in the bottom of the second with six of them being brought around to score to put the Hornets in an early 6-0 hole.

The Champions tacked on another run in the bottom of the third off of a sacrifi ce fly to make it a 7-0 game.

The game was brought to an early end in the bottom of the fifth as the Champions scored three more runs in the frame to trigger the mercy rule and beat the Hornets by 10.

Jernigan pitched the first three innings for the Hornets with two strikeouts, five hits, two walks and seven unearned runs allowed.

Kildoo pitched 1 1-3 innings in relief with three hits, two earned runs and one unearned run allowed.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 11-5 on the season.

They next played Monday at Cornersville High School in a game which came after the Herald Chronicle’s press deadline.
