Middle school Hornets take losses to Fayetteville, South Lincoln

The Huntland Middle School Hornets lost to the South Lincoln Eagles 75-29 on the road Monday for their third loss of the season.
The Hornets fell behind by double digits in the opening period and weren’t able to bounce back as their record for the season moved to an even .500.
The Eagles opened the contest with a 19-4 run to immediately establish control of the game.
Huntland trailed 28-13 after one quarter.
The Eagles also scored the first nine points of the second quarter before the Hornets chipped away some of the early sizable deficit.
The Hornets trailed 39-19 at halftime. Bryant Mooney scored 14 of Huntland’s 19 points in the first half.
Mooney also scored all 10 of Huntland’s points in the third quarter as the deficit grew to more than 30 points.
The Hornets trailed 61-29 going into the final period.
The Hornets were held scoreless throughout the fourth quarter while the Eagles continued to add to the lead as the final deficit settled at 46 points.
Mooney led the Hornets with 24 points for the game, followed by Adon Bass and Evan Goode with two points each.
Davis Keith scored one point.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 3-3 on the season.
Fayetteville 44, Hornets 27
The Hornets lost to the Fayetteville Tigers 44-27 at home Thursday for their second loss of the season.
The Hornets were outscored in each quarter as the Tigers steadily pulled away to give them a loss in the home matchup.
Micah Tipps hit a pair of 3-pointers in the opening period to provide all of the points in the Hornets for the quarter while the Tigers ended the period with a slight advantage.
Huntland trailed 10-6 after one quarter.
The Tigers continued to add to their early advantage in the second quarter as they built up a solid 23-14 lead over the Hornets at halftime.
The deficit grew to double digits in the third quarter as the Hornets were not able to keep up with the scoring pace set by the Tigers. Goode scored four of Huntland’s six points in the third quarter.
Huntland trailed 36-20 going into the final period.
The fourth quarter would be the closest of the day, but the Hornets still weren’t able to make up any ground to conclude the 17-point loss. Tipps scored six of Huntland’s seven points in the fourth quarter.
Tipps led the Hornets with 16 points for the game, followed by Goode with six points and Mooney with four.
Bryson Walker scored one point.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 3-2 on the season.
They will next play Tuesday at Moore County Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
