Lady Trojans top Highland Rim to open campaign

The South Middle School Lady Trojans beat the Highland Rim Lady Hornets 31-28 at home Monday in their first game of the season.
The score was kept close throughout with the Lady Trojans overcoming a slight halftime deficit to secure a narrow win in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Trojans were limited to two points in the opening period on a basket by Svetlana Fuqua, but they still only trailed by one possession when the first quarter ended.
They trailed 5-2 after one quarter.
The teams kept pace with each other throughout the second quarter with the Lady Hornets adding another point to their lead before the half ended.
South trailed 13-9 at halftime.
The Lady Trojans allowed just four points in the third quarter as they were able to chip away at the deficit and tie the score at 17-17 going into the final period.
Both teams saved their best offensive period for last as the Lady Trojans almost doubled their point total in the fourth quarter and held on for a three-point victory.
Zoe Cole led the Lady Trojans with nine points for the game, followed by Victoria Latham with seven points and Khylee Speich with six.
Chloe Cole scored four points, Fuqua and Addilyn Carter scored two points each, and Kamille Morris scored one point.
With the win, the Lady Trojans began their season with a record of 1-0.
They will next play Thursday at home against North Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
