The Franklin County High School boys soccer team lost to the Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles 3-1 at home Tuesday for the team’s third loss of the season.

The Franklin County players fell behind early in the contest and weren’t able to mount a comeback in their first district contest of the season.

Franklin County head soccer coach Kent Bean said that the game came down to a few key mistakes from his team, particularly in the first half.

“If we could have avoided making just a few costly errors, I think it was a pretty even game. We talked about it a little bit halftime and we fixed a few things,” he said before talking about how he was pleased with how his squad performed overall. “I’m proud of the effort we had. We’ve got a lot of young guys playing. We saw some good things, and most importantly, we saw a lot of things we need to work on.”

The Golden Eagles got their first score of the day with about 16 minutes remaining in the first half when one of their players broke past the defense and fired a shot into the net.

The Golden Eagles scored again just three minutes later off of a corner kick to make it a two-score game.

In the waning seconds of the first half, Franklin County sent a goal kick deep down the field with Kevin Hernandez receiving the ball and appearing to have a clear path to the net, but he was tripped from behind just outside of the goal box.

Hernandez then took the ensuing free kick with his shot hitting off the left goalpost and out of bounds as the half came to an end.

Franklin County trailed 2-0 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles were called for a handball in their own goal box with 26:39 left in the contest, and Rylan Banks nailed the ensuing penalty kick to get Franklin County on the board. It was the fourth goal of the season for Banks.

However, the Golden Eagles got another goal off of a corner kick with about 18 minutes remaining, and Franklin County wouldn’t be able to score again as the final deficit settled at two.

With the loss, Franklin County moved to 3-3 on the season and 0-1 in district play.

The boys soccer team will next play Thursday at Coffee County Central High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
