Lady Hornets trounce Tullahoma in home contest

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Tullahoma Lady Wildcats 13-2 at home Friday for their second win of the season.
The Lady Hornets scored multiple runs in every inning of the contest as they steadily pulled away for a blowout victory.
Huntland head softball coach Michael Tipps said that his players have done a good job recently of creating offensive pressure against opposing teams with their last two games ending in double-digit victories.
“We’re putting the ball in play and making the other team make plays. Those first few games this year, we had a lot of strikeouts and a lot of easy, weak contact. We’re starting to barrel some (pitches) up pretty well,” he said. “When you put pressure on the pitcher to throw strikes and you put pressure on the defense to make plays in the field, we start scoring a few more runs.”
The Lady Wildcats scored the first run of the day as they recorded an RBI single in the top of the first to make it a 1-0 game.
However, the Lady Hornets quickly pulled ahead in the bottom of the first as Lily Jackson hit a threerun triple and Natalynn Bolin drew a bases-loaded walk in the frame to give their team a 4-1 advantage.
The Lady Hornets tacked on another four runs in the bottom of the second as Catara Johnson scored on a wild pitch and Peyton Counts recorded a three-run triple to stretch the early deficit up to 8-1.
The Lady Wildcats got one of those runs back in the top of the third, but the Lady Hornets then scored two more runs in the bottom of the third as Millie Walker and Johnson scored off of errors to put the overall score at 10-2.
The Lady Hornets scored their final three runs for the game in the bottom of the fourth as Emily Stewart hit into an RBI groundout and Kinah Mason and Jackson recorded consecutive RBI doubles to make it a 13-2 game.
The Lady Wildcats were retired in order in the top of the fifth as the Lady Hornets triggered the mercy rule to end the contest early and won by 11.
Mason pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with three strikeouts, four hits, two walks and two unearned runs allowed for the day.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 2-4 on the season.

MTCS 8, Lady Hornets 4
The Lady Hornets lost to the Middle Tennessee Christian Lady Cougars 8-4 on the road on March 17 for their fourth loss of the season.
The Lady Cougars took an early lead in the contest with a rally from the Lady Hornets in the middle innings coming up short.
Tipps said that his team played well defensively in the contest, but he added that the Lady Hornets had a few missed offensive opportunities throughout the day.
“We didn’t hit the ball very well,” he said. “We’ve got to learn how to put the ball in play, even if it’s a groundout. We’ve got to have productive outs.”
The Lady Cougars had five of their first six batters reach base in the bottom of the first with two RBI doubles and a three-run home run putting Huntland in a 5-0 hole.
Emma Hopkins, Walker and Johnson drew walks in the top of the third to load the bases with nobody out, and Stewart then drew a walk of her own to bring in Hopkins from third base and get the Lady Hornets on the board.
Mason and Jackson contributed consecutive RBI groundouts for Huntland immediately afterward to cut the deficit down to 5-3.
