The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to Gordonsville Tigerettes 12-2 at home Friday for their eighth loss of the season.
The Tigerettes scored a majority of their runs in the first few innings with the Lady Hornets not being able to keep up with their opponents’ offensive pace.
The Tigerettes put up five runs in the first inning and three runs in the second to quickly put the Lady Hornets in a deep hole.
Two more runs in the third and one in the fourth gave Gordonsville an 11-0 lead at the midway point of the game.
The Lady Hornets collected their only two hits for the day in the bottom of the fourth as singles by DeAnna Burton and Hazel Reed, along with a walk drawn by Jocy May, loaded the bases with Burton coming across to score on a fielder’s choice hit by Blair Finchum.
The Lady Hornets added another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Finchum to put the score at 11-2 and avoid the mercy rule.
However, the Tigerettes scored another run in the top of the seventh and didn’t allow any more runs as the Lady Hornets lost by 10.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 13-8 on the season.
They will next play Tuesday at home against South Pittsburg High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
