HERBERT ELLIOTT JR.
ELLIOTT, Herbert “Egypt” “June Bug,” Jr., was born on Sept. 7, 1966, to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Elliott, Sr. in Winchester, Tennessee, and went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 26, 2023. He is survived by his only son, Christopher Lee Elliott (Katasha) of Winchester. He also leaves to mourn seven grandchildren, Allisa, Malachi, Tali-Ana, Maylaysia, Ayana, Isaiah and Davion; one great-granddaughter; three step-children, Latoria, Michael and David; two sisters, Gloria Holloway (Morris Rucker) and Diane King (George); cousin, Johnica Elliott; and a host of nieces and nephews along with a multitude of cousins. Jr was preceded in death by his mother, Oza Lee Sisk Elliott; father, Herbert Elliott, Jr.; brother, Lee Majors Elliott; and loving and devoted cousin who he greatly appreciated, Sandy Elliott. Jr was a graduate of Franklin County High School. He served his country in the United States Army in Korea. Jr worked a number of years as an apprentice bricklayer in our community. His work with Diversitech Plastics was very rewarding until his health began to decline. One fact that many may not have known was that Jr had the gift of a photographic memory. His talent of recall was mostly accurate. He was an avid history buff and enjoyed reading books. JAMES GOODMAN
GOODMAN, James Franklin, of Winchester, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at his residence, at the age of 75. A native of Decherd, Dr. Goodman graduated from Franklin County High in 1965, then attended Columbia State Community College and the University of Tennessee, before receiving his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Goodman had a private practice in Clarksville before joining the United States Air Force and moving to Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Dr. Goodman then earned a Master in Public Health from the University of North Carolina while stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Their family then moved to Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana and Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. While in the military, Dr. Goodman graduated from Squadron Officer School, Air Command & Staff College and Air War College. He retired as a lieutenant colonel, then worked as a dietician at Rush Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. Dr. Goodman was a songwriter and loved singing and playing his Gibson 12-string guitar. Some of his favorite memories were owning a shrimp boat in Biloxi and making excursions in the Gulf of Mexico, spending time with family in Mobile, Alabama, and watching college football and basketball. Franklin is now reunited with his parents, the late Charles Goodman and Lala Selman Goodman VanBlaricum; his two sisters, the late Judy Goodman and Linda Goodman Smith; and many other loved ones. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Melinda; three children, Scottie Summerlin of Signal Mountain, Dan Goodman (Candie) of Enterprise, Mississippi, and Chreyl Reid (Justin) of Collinsville, Mississippi; seven grandchildren, Jake, Jack, Cadon, Olivea, Slayde, Peyton and Holland; two siblings, Dr. Charles Goodman of Milton and Robert Goodman of Athens; and many beloved relatives. DAVIS, Brooxie Gemaine Hill, age 78, passed away at her Estill Springs home while surrounded by her loved ones on Monday, June 26, 2023. Brooxie was born on Jan. 27, 1945, in Chattanooga to Wilburn Hill and Ella Mae Adcox Hill. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Leodius Hill, Emiul Hill and Hollis Hill; and a sister, Edna Gilliam. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Earl Davis; sister, Sherrie Perry; daughters, Tammy (Michael) Summers of Estill Springs, and Dylana (Brant) Seay of Tullahoma; sons, Troy (Sandra) Davis and Shannon (Ami) Davis, both of Estill Springs; grandchildren, Ryan (Whitney) Davis, Christopher Summers (Hailey Floyd), Brent (Brook) Davis, Matthew Summers (Jennifer Deal), Hannah (Austin) Brown, Cole Stewart (Tianna Miller), Logan Davis, Trevan Seay and Heidi Seay; great-grandchildren, Sadie Davis, Mac Davis, Henley Davis, Madi Davis, Carter Summers, Riley Hill, Kinsley Davis, EllaMae Brown, Gibson Brown and Stella Stewart; a beloved canine, Bentley; and a host of nieces and nephews. Brooxie attended Estill Springs School where she met Earl during the first grade who adored her immensely. They grew up “sweethearts” and married in 1962. She was always devoted to her children and husband as they moved throughout the United States. They made a wonderful life together and enjoyed dirt track racing, traveling with their children, camping and fishing. Brooxie had a talent for making ceramics, crocheting and sewing. With a beautiful smile, she would light up a room with her outgoing personality. She will be forever remembered as the protector of her children and grandchildren and for her feisty attitude. WANDA GARRETT
GARRETT, Wanda Jean Walker, age 87, of Belvidere, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2023, at St. Thomas West Medical Center in Nashville. She was born on Nov. 7, 1935, in Lincoln County to the late Robert Lee and Nannie Pearl (Hall) Walker. For about 10 years, she was employed as a school bus driver for the Franklin County school system. She then became a devoted homemaker and enjoyed the time taking care of her beloved family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoyed working in her flower garden, spending time with her four-legged best friend, Tom and traveling anywhere her family would go. Her family will remember her loving and caring nature, as she was the rock of the family, and her fashionable style. Jean was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Bobby H. Garrett; son, Tim Garrett; grandson, Timmy Garrett; great-grandson, Baby Max Redwine; brothers, Douglas (Nadine) Walker and Fred (Kathleen) Walker; sister, Jewel (June) Arnold and Billie Anderson; son-in-law, Rick Riel; and brother-in-law, Glenn Laster. POSEY, Frances Prince, age 92, of Scottsboro, Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at her residence while surrounded by her loving family. A native of Jackson County, Alabama, she was born on Dec. 26, 1930, to the late Claude and Essie (Houston) Prince. A dedicated homemaker, she enjoyed cooking, working in her flowers and gardening. But most of all, she cherished the time spent with her beloved family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Posey and brother, Buis Prince. Frances is survived by her loving sons, Larry (Dixie) Posey, David Posey and Mike Posey, all of Scottsboro, Alabama; brother, Carlos (Faye) Prince of Shelbyville; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. GASS, Geraldine Stephens, age 83, of Cowan, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2023. A native of Franklin County, she was born in Winchester, on May 13, 1940, to the late Benny Gordon and Nancy Jane (Steele) Stephens. Before her retirement, she was employed as a CNA at Southern Tennessee Regional Health System. In her spare time, she enjoyed quilting, sewing and traveling when she was able. Geraldine will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor. She was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Alma Fowler, Betty Miller, Marie Askins, Ruby Bishop and Shirley Dimos; brother, Benny Stephens; daughter, Michelle Shetters; and son, Robby Gass. JAMES BOYD
BOYD, James (Jimmy), passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Southern Tennessee Regional Health System. He was born in Wrigley, Tennessee, on Oct. 31, 1924, to the late Robert and Hazel (Peeler) Boyd. He was a Marine during World War II where he served with Carlson’s Raiders in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he returned to Hickman County and married Jean Cochran Boyd. James ran Boyd’s Grocery in Lyles for 27 years before moving to Winchester. He loved to work and in his spare time enjoyed fishing, woodworking, traveling, creating stained glass, Christmas decorating and yard work. James was a faithful member of the Winchester Church of Christ, a member of the 158 Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, Shriners and the Winchester Eastern Star. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Jean; sisters, Robbie Patton and Laura Elizabeth Speight; son, Glenn Boyd; and grandson, Jayme Church. James is survived by his daughter, Barbara Church Coffelt (William) of Estill Springs; grandsons, Cary Carter Church of Winchester, and Greg Boyd (Sherry) of North Carolina; great-grandchildren, Jena, Jess and Josh Church of Winchester, Reese and Erin Church of Cleveland, and Scott and Alaina Boyd of North Carolina; and great-great-grandchildren, Ivey, Jameson, and Abel Church of Winchester. DAVIS, William Walter “Bouncer” Jr., age 88, of Winchester, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023, at his residence while surrounded by his loving family. A native of Franklin County, he was born in Winchester, on April 12, 1935, to the late William Walter and Georgia Mae (Morris) Davis, Sr. William was a veteran of the Army National Guard. He was a lifelong farmer, growing corn, soy and cotton crops and loved every minute he spent on his tractor. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and gardening as well as participating in tractor pulls. His family will recall his honesty and “larger than life” personality. William would make friends with a stranger. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Joyce Davis. SMITH, Ronald Edward, age 76, of Winchester, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, while surrounded by his family. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on Jan. 4, 1947, to the late Everette and Alma L. (Lyle) Gray. Ron proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was employed as a correctional officer for the Franklin County Sheriff Department and retired in 2009. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, motorcycle riding, taking trips to Destin, Florida, and was an avid University of Tennessee Volunteers fan. Ron’s outgoing personality allowed him to never meet a stranger. He was a devoted man of Christian faith and a member of Keith Springs Mountain Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Charissa Smith, and siblings, Michael Gray and Peggy Lassiter. Ron is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Linda Smith; children, Bruce (Mary) Smith and Ronnie (Gary) Pacetti; grandchildren, Zach (Olivia) Smith, Montana Smith, Eric Pacetti and Isaiah Smith; great-granddaughter, Juniper Smith; and nephew, Jeff (Jessica) Gray. HAAS, Robert Glenn, age 78, of Winchester, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023, at Southern Tennessee Regional Health System–Winchester, while surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Aug. 15, 1944, in Huntsville, Alabama, to the late Jesse and Josephine (Gullatt) Haas. Glenn was formerly employed by Wilton Corporation, Brown’s Body Shop and retired from the Franklin County School System, where he was a custodian at Franklin County High School. He was a member of the Winchester Church of Christ and was a 32nd Degree Mason at the Winchester Masonic Temple. Glenn was an avid collector of 50’s memorabilia, Lionel trains and was a fan of Elvis. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Vera Steele Haas of Winchester; son, Steven Glenn (Nancy) Haas of Winchester; daughter, Cynthia Ann (Ronnie) Matlock of Estill Springs; granddaughter, Hailey Rose Matlock of Estill Springs; and sister, Patricia Ann (Anthony) Schwartz of Winchester. MASTER, Monica Maria, age 49, of Belvidere, left her earthly home and went to her heavenly home to be with Jesus on Saturday, July 1, 2023. Monica was born in Winchester, on Nov. 20, 1973, to parents, Charles and Sue Bates. Monica graduated from Motlow College with honors with an Associate Degree in Nursing. She loved nursing and continued her education receiving her B.S. degree and then her Nurse Practitioner degree from MTSU with honors. Monica loved her work. She loved taking care of her patients and gave each one her full attention. Monica loved the beach and enjoyed going every year! Her favorite holiday was Christmas as she would decorate and want everyone to have a gift. Monica had a huge heart for others, in fact, her heart was the biggest thing about her. Monica was a member of Maxwell Baptist Church and loved her church family. Monica will be remembered as a kind, patient and loving person who always wanted to help others. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Bates and step-father, Bill Anderson. Monica is survived by her loving husband of 22 years, K.C. Master; son, Kason Simon Master; mother, Sue Stephenson; stepfather, Jim Stephenson; sisters, Barsha (Tony) Land and Samantha Talley (Chivas Jefferson); father and mother-in-law, Danny and Carol Medlen; nephews, C.J. and Jonathan Talley; and many uncles, aunts, cousins and special friends.
