Hornets drop Thanksgiving tourney opener to Lincoln County

The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Lincoln County Falcons 63-54 at Cornersville Monday in a first-round game for the Cornersville Thanksgiving Classic.

The Hornets fell behind early in the contest and were unable to take the lead back despite keeping the score relatively close throughout the day.

The Falcons started the game with a 14-2 run to immediately give themselves a decent edge over the Hornets. Demetri Reed scored six of Huntland’s 10 points in the first quarter.

Huntland trailed 20-10 after one quarter.

The Hornets scored the first nine points of the second quarter to make it a one-point game, but the Falcons answered back with nine straight points of their own to re-establish their advantage.

Huntland trailed 33-26 at halftime.

The teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter with the Falcons ultimately adding another point to their lead in the period.

Huntland trailed 46-38 going into the final period.

The Hornets cut the deficit down to three points early in the fourth quarter, but they weren’t able to pull any closer as the Falcons pulled away once more to beat them by nine.

Lashawn Kimmons led the Hornets with 21 points for the game, followed by Trace Kilpatrick with 15 points and Reed with seven.

Landon Farmer scored six points, Caydon Bradford scored four and Kannon Lafevers scored one.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 1-3 on the season.

They will next play Tuesday at Cornersville High School in a consolation semifinal game for the Cornersville Thanksgiving Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
