Lady Hornets top Spring Hill to open Thanksgiving tourney

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Spring Hill Lady Raiders 45-37 at Cornersville Monday in a first-round game for the Cornersville Thanksgiving Classic.
The Lady Hornets pulled away late in the first half and remained in front by a comfortable amount for the rest of the day to get their first victory of the year.
The score was kept close throughout the opening period with the teams tied at 11-11 going into the second quarter.
The Lady Hornets scored the last eight points of the first half to give themselves some separation on the scoreboard after a back-and-forth start to the second quarter.
They led 27-19 at halftime.
The Lady Hornets pushed their advantage up to double digits in the third quarter as they remained in firm control of the game.
They led 37-25 going into the final period.
The lead for the Lady Hornets peaked at 16 points early in the fourth quarter before a 12-4 run by the Lady Raiders to end the day put the final margin of victory at eight. Yareli Avalos scored six of Huntland’s eight points in the fourth quarter.
Bailey Morris led the Lady Hornets with 14 points for the game, followed by Maddie Burks with 10 points and Kinsley Kilpatrick and Avalos with eight points each.
Stratton Davis scored five points.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 1-3 on the season.
They will next play Tuesday against Summertown High School at Cornersville in a semifinal game for the Cornersville Thanksgiving Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
