Trojans pull away late versus Hornets at home

The South Trojans beat the Huntland Middle Hornets 62-46 at South Middle School Tuesday in a cross-county matchup between the two programs.

The Trojans took an early lead in the contest and pulled away in the fourth quarter to end a three-game losing streak while extending Huntland’s winless streak to four games.

The Trojans got off to a strong start on offense as they built up a double-digit lead in the opening period. The 20-point quarter for the Trojans included a trio of 3-pointers from Bentley Baldwin.

South led 20-10 after one quarter.

The Hornets were able to bounce back and contained the Trojans’ offense more effectively in the second quarter as they chipped away a decent portion of the deficit.

South led 25-19 at halftime. Bryant Mooney scored 11 of Huntland’s 19 points in the first half.

Both teams put together strong offensive periods in the third quarter with the Trojans maintaining their lead and taking a 42-36 advantage into the final period.

The Trojans ended the game with another big offensive quarter to match their point total from the opening period as they pulled away to win by 16. Mooney scored eight of Huntland’s 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Baldwin led the Trojans with 15 points for the game, followed by Kaveon Sutton, Levi Lindsey and Odeviyon Poe with 11 points each. Baldwin hit five 3-pointers in the contest with the Trojans hitting nine total shots from beyond the arc for the day.

William Money scored six points, Jacoba Fells scored four, and Brennan Taylor and Cameron Denton scored two points each.

The Hornets were led in scoring by Mooney with 21 points, followed by Evan Goode with eight points and Davis Keith and Adon Bass with seven points.

Bryson Walker scored three points.

With the win, the Trojans improved to 4-5 on the season.

They will next play on Nov. 30 at home against Warren County Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
